Threshold began as a site-specific new music performance work for the enormous, labyrinthine and magnificent Silos at Sawyer Yards in April 2017. The performance was a mythopoetic underworld journey— an offering which speaks to the chaotic upheaval we are all feeling in our world: what kind of world will we choose to create together?
Loosely inspired by, and an abstract interpretation of, the Homeric Hymn to Demeter (c. seventh century BCE) which tells a mother-daughter passion play of abduction, loss, and renewal. Ceremonial rites enacting the myth were held at Eleusis in Greece for a thousand years before the rise of Christianity, and artists, then and now, freely interpret the story. We have very few details about the original events, but they were thought to be transformational for participants, honoring the cycle of life and offering a philosophy based in meaning and hope.

Liminal
Luminous
Step. Over
One. Step.
Over. Come
Ever. After
Under. World
Other. World
Our. World
Discord, descent, plummet, plunge, dive, crash, wane, degrade
Fall
Drop, tumble
Spiral
Can you stop this?
“The center cannot hold”
Plant, reap, sow, eat, grow, sell
Plant, reap, rape, eat, sow, grow, sell
Train and gate
Load and wait
To the market
To the market
Sell her to the market
Apart
Apart from
Pomegranate, narcissus and honey
Guardian of the well
Watcher of the well saw it all:
His hands on her
His hands on her body
Silent
Silence
Complicit
Complicit men
Complicit women Famine upon the land
Chaos
The world is unrecognizable
Darkness
The Portal opens
The Portal closes
What kind of world?
Thresh
